Hot Morning on the Green

These three friends & I went golfing this morning. Well, they golfed and I caddied :P I did putt a few holes, but for the most prt I drove the cart around and cheered the girls on. Afterwards we went in for drinks and lunch. It was a great excuse to spend time with these friends, whom I haven't seen since the end of June. We made it an earlier time in order to get out of the worst heat of the day. Fore!!

Oh How they Grow....

Above, as my Blog header, I have posted a Collage of two of my Grandchildren. I cannot believe how much they are growing and changing. I love who they are and the different personalities they each have. They spent the July 1st weekend at their Great-Gramma's place, riding horses and having a very fun time. One thing that totally floors me is that their Great-Gramma still heaves bales of hay and rides her horses. She keeps a huge garden and lives off of the veggies all winter. She is still so active it puts me to shame :P
Anyhow, I just wantd to brag about my wonderful, smart grandkids :) My son just dropped off the memory stick with these pics, so I can develop some ad update my frames.

Back to School Resource Guide

Tips and Strategies for the Elementary School Years

As a parent, you know all too well that elementary school is one big adventure. The first-grader in the family is excited about going to school with the big kids; the kids in the other grades are happy to get back into the schoolroom with their friends.
For the most part, these little learners are thrilled about the school days ahead. They’ve been told for a long time that school is a great deal of fun. They can’t wait to get there—or to get back there.
As you start gathering up new clothes, lunch boxes, backpacks and more for the school year ahead, here are some tips to help get things off to a smooth and happy start.

Before School Starts
Make sure to attend your school’s open house. This event offers the chance to meet the teachers and help the students get an understanding of the school, the classroom and the things that will be expected of them in the year ahead.

Learn about the school dress code. Some schools have a rigid uniform policy (requiring specific clothing), some schools have a relaxed uniform plan (requiring clothing in specific colors or styles), and some schools simply list attire that’s determined to be inappropriate for the classroom (shirts with certain slogans or off-color language, midriff baring tops, etc.).

Spend some time talking with your youngster about clothing and the way it contributes to the creation of that all-important first impression. Think about the child’s school day and make certain the clothing choices—and the shoes—are appropriate for the classroom and the playground. Help your child learn to dress for success, regardless of her or his age.

Make sure you have a copy of the summer reading list well in advance so that your child can work on summer reading in a leisurely manner. You can find a great deal of information on children’s books on the American Association of School Librarians web site at http://www.aasl.org/.

Create opportunities to read with your elementary student. Get to know your school and public librarians. During trips to the library, let your child pick out a chapter book just for fun, to keep him or her reading throughout the summer.

Obtain copies of all supply and requirement lists as early as possible. Buy the supplies as soon as you can. Younger students will enjoy taking a look at the new items and learning about their possible uses.

Check the school policy on electronic devices. In some school districts, children are not permitted to bring phones and MP3 players to school.

School Prep
Communicate with other parents; start a parent networking group. Ask the parents of older students if they have any tips for students of your child’s age. Learn from those who have already had the experience.

Although you may not know who’s in which class for a while, this is still a good time to build a directory of contacts in the same grade. Gather phone numbers and email addresses. Buddy up now so that you can ask questions later.

Help your youngster practice going to bed on time with a regular sleep schedule well in advance of the start of school. Make sure your child doesn’t arrive at school exhausted after staying up until midnight. An extremely tired learner will be unable to absorb anything during the school day.

Establish a plan for a healthy breakfast for your child, especially if she or he is responsible for making the morning meal. Proper nutrition at the start of the day will help a student work well; inadequate nutrition can lead a student to lose a good piece of the morning because he or she is too hungry to function.

Create a nutritious lunch plan for your youngster. Make sure that your child has a good lunch, whether it’s brought from home or purchased at the school. If your student is bringing lunch from home, make sure that the food choices are things that she or he is willing to eat. The school lunchroom isn’t the place for experimentation; a child must be well-fed to learn well.

Talk about transportation plans with your youngsters. Make sure they understand how they will be getting to school and getting home. Talk about the importance of getting to the bus stop early. Let them know who will be waiting for them when they arrive at the bus stop, car pool location, or at home.

School Days
As school gets under way, you can be certain that your little learner will have a great time in the classroom. Keep in mind that, as long as he or she is physically ready—well rested, cleaned up and nutritiously fed—everything else will flow smoothly at school.

A/C on a Hot Summer Drive

Gwillim Lake Provincial Park
"Winds whispering through the pine forests, waves lapping at the shoreline, Gwillim Lake Provincial Park provides a peaceful outdoor experience. Set in the picturesque Rocky Mountain Foothills on Highway 29, a half-hour's drive from Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge and the massive Northeast Coal development, visitors can enjoy canoeing, kayaking, swimming, hiking, fishing and a viewpoint that provides a panoramic vista of the superb Rocky Mountain scenery."

Yesterday Hubby & I joined Dad & Mom in their lovely Jeep Campass and drove out to Tumbler Ridge, BC and then on to Gwillim Lake Provincial Park. My brother, Sis-in-law and two kids are camping at the park and that was a good enough excuse for us to drive out on such a lovely hot summer day to go see them. I had never been to Gwillim lake before and would have happily joined my Nephew and Niece in n the water had I known it would be so nice for swimming :)

Amelia Earhart Day-July 24

Amelia Earhart Day - July 24th

Born July 24, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas, Amelia flew her first plane in 1921. Her name became a household word in 1932 when she was the 2nd person to fly solo across the Atlantic. In 1935, she was the first person to fly solo across the Pacific. Her next flight was planned to circle the globe at the equator. On July 2, 1937, she and her navigator disappeared at sea just 2 days short of finishing the trip.

Amelia Earhart has inspired generations of women to do things that had never been done by women before.

"Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace with yourself." --Amelia Earhart

Dog Days of Summer

It's a matter of perspective, based upon our geographical location, at what point on the thermometer we call "hot". If I were to say to my friend living in the Thompson/Okanagan region of BC that it's 29c, she would snort and say that it's 38c there, so what am I calling hot?? Now, I live in North-Eastern BC, and she lives Central-Southern BC....and in this province, that can make a huge difference!! So, for us here today, it's crept up to 29c and it's hot ot there, baby!! :P

Up in Smoke 3

Finally some good news...one of the three fires burning is 60% contained allowing 6,000 people to return to their homes. With the collective efforts of firefighters, water-bombers and helicopters significant headway is made on the biggest blaze threatening homes.
"We have no reason to believe they were deliberately set. Given the weather conditions and the fire weather indices, the dryness of the fuels, the ease of ignition there's a number of human-related fire causes," says Wayne Schnitzler of West Kelowna Fire Rescue
*******
The weather here remains sunny and quite pleasantly warm. We don't get the temperatures of the Interior of BC, but it's up to 28c, which is good enough for me :)
I have completed my domestic chores and plan to sit outside for a bit to read and enjoy the breezy sunshine and sip my cup of coffee....ahhh, the joys of a summer day :)

Dancing With God

When I meditated on the word Guidance,

I kept seeing 'dance' at the end of the word

And I remember reading that doing God's will is a lot like dancing.

When two people try to lead, nothing feels right.

The movement doesn't flow with the music,

And everything is quite uncomfortable and jerky.

When one person realizes that, and lets the other lead,

Both bodies begin to flow with the music.

One gives gentle cues, perhaps with a nudge to the back

Or by pressing Lightly in one direction or another.

It's as if two become one body, moving beautifully.

The dance takes surrender, willingness,

And attentiveness from one person

And gentle guidance and skill from the other.

My eyes drew back to the word Guidance.

When I saw 'G': I thought of God, followed by 'u' and 'i'.

'God, 'u' and 'i' dance.' God, you, and I dance.

As I lowered my head, I became willing to trust that I would get guidance about my life and once again, I became willing to let God lead.

My prayer for you today is that God's blessings

And mercies are upon you on this day and everyday.

May you abide in God, as God abides in you.

Dance together with God,

Trusting God to lead and to guide you through each season of your life.

This prayer is powerful and there is nothing attached.

If God has done anything for you in your life,

Please share this message with someone else.

There is no cost but a lot of rewards; so let's continue to pray for one another.

And I Hope You Dance !

Up in Smoke 2

Curtesy of castanet.net

"B.C. officials in the West Kelowna area say they have one wildfire about 40 per cent contained, but admit they have been unable to get a handle on two others burning in the region." CTV News
"So far, 11,000 people have been told to leave their homes, while another 6,000 are on evacuation alert. Some are staying at a local community centre or in hotels, while others are bunking with friends and family." CTV News
Sad to say, this fire keeps growing...it's creating a lot of unrest, fear and lack of sleep among those on Evacuation Alert. I must admit I cannot even imagine being in a situation like this. It just saddens me to think of all the loss and damage of so many families.
******

On the home front, it's gorgeous, sunny weather and after several days of torrential thunder storms rolling in, this entire week is supposed to be sunny, dry and hot...finally! What a great start to this week!!

Yesterday our City had an Airshow and I caught a bit of it with planes flying, screeching and booming across the sky overhead. Most impressive was the tight formation of the famous Canadian Airforces Snow Birds

Wishing all my Blogger friends a wonderful Summer week :)

Up in Smoke

Sis years after the last big forest fire in West Kelowna, another fire broke out yesterday forcing 10,000 people to evacuate, BC Hydro shut down power to 4,000 homes, as of last evening 9 houses burned to the ground, the key highway through Kelowna to the Okananagan and the Connector highway to Merritt was closed, and so far, it appears the fire is spreading. CTV News reports "At least 45 firefighters, six helicopters, and eight airtanks were engaged in fighting the lastest fire on Saturday. Another 40 firefighters were reported to be on their way to the area." I pray that this wildfire is contained speedily so, unlike the wildfire of 2003, 239 homes are not destroyed again.

Apollo Moon Mission

TeachersFirst Update - July 20 & 27, 2009

To The Moon!
If you are teaching this week --or even if you are not -- do not miss the first featured site this week, the John F. Kennedy Library's online re-enactment of the Apollo 11 moon mission, in "real time" but 40 years later. If you cannot use this site with students this week, fear not. It will remain online for your use indefinitely, allowing you to "experience" the events all over again, complete with all the NASA transmissions. No longer is the moon landing a "once in a lifetime," but it still feels like one. Read more about it.

We Choose the Moon - John F. Kennedy Library Grades 0 to 12

Relive the Apollo 11 moon mission in rich multimedia format. Follow the mission in "real time" exactly 40 years later, including all transmissions. For those who are not old enough to remember the 1969 mission, the real experience is powerful. For those who do remember, this site can spark personal commentary and oral history of the historic days during the summer of 1969. Offered by the John F. Kennedy library, this re-enactment started in 40-year-old "real time in July, 2009, but can be accessed and experienced in all or in part at any time after its "conclusion" on July 20, 2009. This is the ultimate "primary source"!

In the Classroom:
Bring your class into the space exploration era on a projector or interactive whiteboard (be sure to turn on speakers!). Include this experience as part of a unit on the 1960s, a science study and comparison of technologies since the 1960s, or as part of a unit about the moon. Allow students to explore and navigate the site on their own, then write a "blog post" as an astronaut or a NASA worker in 1969. "Follow" the mission in real time over a period of several days, letting it run on your classroom computer, and assigning different students to report on the day's events. Explore some of the actual flight data in physics class as a practical application of some of Newton's laws. Use this site as a spark for students to collect oral histories on this and other events of the 1960s, using media resources as prompts to talk with family and friends about their recollections.

Heart

One group I couldn't get enough of was Heart, who started up in the 70's and have been around up until recently. One big highlight of recent years is that Ann sang with Carrie Underwood on American Idol. One thing I so admire Ann Wilson for is, that after years of battling her weight, she went in for a Lap-band and has taken steps to a healthier woman. Typical of the Hay-days of bands is that there are so many drugs, parties and late nights, making it almost impossible to exist without an addiction of one or more vices.

Another hot summer day...fans blowing...ice-cold water... coconutty sun block...great 60's & 70's tunes to listen to...perfume breezes blowing in thru open windows...ahh, summer :)
As the work week winds down, take some time to take in deep breaths of summer's fragrant oxygen.

"Listen to the Exhortation of the Dawn!
Look to this Day!
For it is Life, the very Life of Life.
In its brief course lie all the
Verities and Realities of your Existence.
The Bliss of Growth,
The Glory of Action,
The Splendor of Beauty;
For Yesterday is but a Dream,
And To-morrow is only a Vision;
But To-day well lived makes
Every Yesterday a Dream of Happiness,
And every Tomorrow a Vision of Hope.
Look well therefore to this Day!
Such is the Salutation of the Dawn!"

Flip-Flops and Lunch

Food is an important part of a balanced diet.
Fran Lebowitz

We drove out to have lunch with my parents today. Thursday has become our usual day to visit with them and we enjoy it. Hubby brings the lawn-trimmer and tidies up the yard and also does whatever small thing that Mom needs a hand with.
Today I brought along a fresh-from-the-garden lettuce salad and added cheese, hard-boiled eggs and some fragrant herbs. Mom served up some leftover Stroganoff, so lunch was delish :)
In case you hadn't noticed....I've changed the look of my Blog to a more summery feel. I love flip-flops!...they're the best invention ever!! I remember wearing them all summer long growing up and still do today....although the ones now seem to be far cushier on the feet. And remember those jelly shoes?? I saw they are out again...go figure!! Oh....and guess what I saw as well, the other day....a gal wearing shoulder pads and had her hair up in a banana-clip...you know what??...somethings should just stay out of fashion when they go out of fashion!!
