World Environment Day June 5 History-Activities-Crafts

World Environment Day-June 5

World Environment Day is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and public action on June 5. It was the day that the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was from June 5 to 16 of 1972. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 . The first World Environment Day was 1973. World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme and is commemorated with an international exposition.

"Stockholm was without doubt the landmark event in the growth of international environmentalism," writes John McCormick in the book Reclaiming Paradise. "It was the first occasion on which the political, social and economic problems of the global environment were discussed at an intergovernmental forum with a view to actually taking corrective action."

World Environment Day is similar to Earth Day.

How to Wash a Toilet

This was simply too much of a time saver not to share it with you.
1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.

2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close the lid.
You may need to stand on the lid.

4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds.
Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.

5. Flush the toilet three or four times.
This provides a 'power-wash' and rinse'.

6. Have someone open the front door of your home.
Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.

7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift the lid.

8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom,
And run outside where he will dry himself off.

9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean..
Sincerely,
The Dog

A Senior Moment

It's a dull, rainy Spring day and my mood is just a grey as the day....so this brought a much needed chuckle.

Flashcard Review

From Jessica Harris:

“My students created flashcards for science vocabulary and
content and put 2-3 definitions or statements on each flashcard.
I do a myriad of different activities with reviewing the cards to
keep the students on their toes. Today each student was given
10 snap cubes (for 10 flashcards) and paired with a partner.
When a student determined that the partner mastered a flash-
card, the partner earned a snap cube. The goal was to earn all
10 snap cubes. Later, the students exchanged the snap cubes
for small prizes.

Vocabulary Building Card Games

From Margie Latall, a substitute teacher in West Bend, Wisconsin

I recently discovered a series of books by Scholastic, Vocabulary
Building Card Games
! There are different grade levels, and the game
cards are reproducible, making it easy for teachers to use immediately.
The book I have from the library is for Grade 3, written by Liane B.
Onish, and it is a 2008 copyright. My local library also had Grade 2
and 5 available. Check it out!”

Armed Forces Day May 15-3rd Saturday

Armed Forces Day

"United in Strength"

Saturday, May 15, 2010

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the Department of Defense.

Happy Cinco de Mayo Day

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for the 5th of May) marks the 1862 victory of the Mexican army over French troops at the Battle of Puebla. It has become a popular cultural holiday in the Southwest, even surpassing its importance in Mexico. The first thing one needs to learn about Cinco de Mayo is that it is not a celebration of Mexican independence. Mexican Independence Day (September 16) commemorates the start of the Mexican revolt against Spain in 1810.

Mothers

With Mothers Day just a few days away, there are some cute e-mails and posts going around. This one is one of my faves :)
Answers given by 2nd grade school children to the following questions:

Why did God make mothers?
1. She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.
2. Mostly to clean the house.
3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

How did God make mothers?
1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.
2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.
3. God made my mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.

What ingredients are mothers made of?
1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.
2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use string, I think.

Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?
1. We're related.
2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's mom like me.

What kind of a little girl was your mom?
1. My mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.
2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.
3. They say she used to be nice.

What did mom need to know about dad before she married him?
1. His last name.
2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer?
3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?

Why did your mom marry your dad?
1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mom eats a lot.
2. She got too old to do anything else with him.
3. My grandma says that mom didn't have her thinking cap on.

Who's the boss at your house?
1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's such a goof ball.
2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.
3. I guess mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.

What's the difference between moms and dads?
1. Moms work at work and work at home and dads just go to work at work.
2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.
3. Dads are taller and stronger, but moms have all the real power 'cause that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friends.
4. Moms have magic, they make you feel better without medicine.

What does your mom do in her spare time?
1. Mothers don't do spare time.
2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.

What would it take to make your mom perfect?
1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.
2. Diet. You know, her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue.

If you could change one thing about your mom, what would it be?
1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that.
2. I'd make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it not me.
3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her head.

Happy Mothers Day!! :)

National Teacher Day and Week-May 3-7

A little Blip....

....in the weather! Mother Nature seems to get confused in May. All this hard work goes into getting this frozen part of the Earth to the blissful state of fragrant spring green bursting out all over the place, with warm breezes blowing and longer sunny days....then suddenly a blast of cold gusts in and dumps a skiff of snow! Ah well...the sun is trying to push thru the clouds and before we know it, it'll be lovely again.....just don't put those nursery plants out yet :P
