I Apologize....

...for the past couple of posts being about food and causing excessive drooling. What can I say??? We did much more than eat, really :P
Today is a absolutly gorgeous, warm Spring day. We have yet to see much green but the plans for this coming weekend is to spend time outside and stain both porches and the windmill on our front porch. Hubby is planning to seal the paved driveway....it's going to look so black and clean.....for about an hour until we repark the car with dusty, dirty tires...but it'll keep the pavement better than without. Personally I think that'll be enough sun time for me....don't want to burn, tee-hee!
I just got home from a huge grocery shop. It was so needed since I hadn't bought any since going south and we were pretty much out of everything. That's always such a chore. I use Environmental recycled bags and love them for all sorts of things, however if they are not packed properly, they can be very heavy. Thankfully Hubby is home and could haul them in for me.
Hope all of you are enjoying this Spring weather to some extent.

May Day May 1

May Day is celebrated around the world as a festival of happiness and joy. Teachers can use the observance of May Day as a source of multicultural activities that can complement a May curriculum. Maypole dancing is the great tradition of May 1st. May Day (May 1st) has long been associated with spring festivals and coincides with the ancient Celtic celebration of Beltane, (from the Celtic sun god Belenus.) It began in Europe as a celebration of the first spring planting, but eventually evolved into an event that would bring many people together. May 1st, often called May Day, just might have more holidays than any other day of the year. It's a celebration of Spring, a day of political protests, a neopagan festival, a saint's feast day, and a day for organized labor. In many countries, it is a national holiday.

P.S....

After getting up, loading our stuff back into the car and leaving by 3:00am....driving for 15 hours back home left me, well...yawning! Today I did manage to get our laundry done and everything put away before going to the Ladies Bible study this afternoon. Um-hummmm, I'm tired and sleepy.

Vera's Burger Shack

We asked the Concierge where to go for a really good burger. He suggested Vera's Burger Shack. Off we walked in search of the best Burger in town :)

What we found was an eclectic, small, sport-themed Burger joint.

With the NHL being in the play-offs right now, Hockey was the big topic. After ordering your burger (we ordered the special...Drunk Chicken Burger with a side of onion rings...the really yummy Beer batter ones) and sat to wait for our order for 10 minutes while the burger is freshly grilled. The atmosphere is upbeat, loud and fun. What you can't see in these pics are the pics on the wall of guys braving the challenge of who can eat the largest Burger....the winner is a guy who downed a nine patty Burger...OMG!!

And there we are....not for those afraid of a bit of fat, nor for the Vegans out there. But these burgers and onion rings were to die for and we will be hitting that Burger Shack again....Mmmmmm!!

April Showers Bring May Flowers

April Showers Bring May Flowers

The benefits of waiting for the April showers to bring May flowers are great. May brings the beginning of the warmer months when the highest number of plants can be found blooming about the world. So next time you’re gloomy about the weather, keep in mind the classic rhyme, April showers bring May flowers. Whether it is for your kids at home or for your classroom, let me help you with Spring time theme planning. See the list of themes or check out these themes: Spring, Gardens, Flowers, Kites, Birds, Bugs, Farms, Picnics, Reptiles, Earth Day, Mother's Day, Weather, Zoos and more on my homepage at
http://geocities.com/mrsjacksonsclass/ .

Because observation is such a basic learning tool, springtime provides an ideal climate for learning outdoors. A nature walk or a picnic will provide excellent opportunities for discovery, observation and discussion. Does spring fever have your students all a-buzz? Use their boundless energy to help them learn about the bees, flowers, trees, plants, weather, animals, and seeds. The essential elements of the season are universal. In every country, in every city, in every pond and forest, and yard, life is beginning again. April Showers Bring May Flowers used to be my favorite poem so I decided that I could teach the genre, celebrate National Poetry Day, and learn about springtime and nature all at the same time. The students will do plant experiments, observe and record the needs of plants (air, sun, water, soil). They will watch as seeds sprout and grow. They will learn as life begins again.

Enjoying Spring

Hubby & I are enjoying Spring down in Southern BC. We left on Wed. at 3:15am and drove the 15 hours to the Hotel I had booked for us in Vancouver. Look at how pretty these tulips are. The day we left Fort St. John, we were just ahead of a Spring Snow storm...I'm enjoying the tulips more :)

Yesterday Hubby had to do a bunch of running around, taking care of some things for his aged Mom, who depends on help so she can remain in her apartment in the Manor. I decided to stay in the city and go across False Creek to the Public Market.

Today we started with a coffee and then a stroll along a tree lined sidewalk to Robson Street where shopping is prime.

Can you see the new little leaves budding??

Arbor Day

Celebrate Arbor Day on April 24, 2009

Arbor Day is a nationally celebrated observance that encourages tree planting, learning, and caring for trees. National Arbor Day was founded by J. Sterling Morton in 1872. Arbor Day is the last Friday of April making it land on April 24, 2009. Some of the states celebrate this tree-loving holiday on other days of the year. In 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day. Arbor Day is now celebrated in many other countries. Teachers can use these resources to help connect young children with nature.

Layers of Planet Earth

Teaching Tip: Layers of Planet Earth
By: Sarah M., Grade 7 & 8 Science Teacher

To teach a child the layers of Earth is a difficult task, he/she can not imagine what we are describing. So I took an apple and cut it in half. Wow! Every part we want to describe is in that apple. Starting from the core moving upward to the apples skin which, represents the Earth´s crust. It even led them to draw the layers. They are reminded of the Earth's layers each time they have an apple. Try it! It works!

Don't Judge by Outward Appearance

I received this story in a Devotional for today. It's just too good not to pass along.

A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband, dressed in homespun, thread bare clothes, stepped off the train in Boston, and walked timidly into the Harvard University President's outer office where they had no appointment. The secretary could tell with one glance that such backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard and probably didn't even deserve to be in Cambridge. She frowned. "We want to see the president," the man said softly. "He'll be busy all day," the secretary snapped. "We'll wait," the lady replied.

For hours, the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. They didn't and the secretary grew more angry and frustrated by the moment. Finally, with great hesitation, she decided to disturb the president. "Maybe if they just see you for a few minutes, they'll leave," she told him. He sighed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn't have the time to spend with them, but he detested gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering up his outer office. The president, stern faced and with dignity, strutted toward the couple.

The lady told him, "We had a son who attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard and was happy here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed so my husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on campus." The president wasn't touched. In fact, he was shocked. "Madam," he said, gruffly, "we can't put up a statue for every person who has attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery." "Oh, no," the lady explained quickly. "We don't want to erect a statue. We thought we would like to give a building to Harvard." The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit and then exclaimed, "A building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven-and-a-half million dollars in the physical plant at Harvard." For a moment, the lady was silent. The president was pleased. Maybe he could get rid of them now.

The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, "Is that all it costs to start a university? Why don't we just start our own?" Her husband nodded. The president's face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford got up and walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California where they established the university that bears their name, a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about.

I wonder how many blessings we miss because we are quick to judge and slow to love. It may surprise you to know that God does not love us because we are so lovable. God loves us because He is love!

Apr 20, 2009

My house is back in shape and quiet again. We had a very lovely weekend and enjoyed our grandkids immensely. I've noticed that both kids need "Grandpa" time and will tease and bug him until he grabs them and wrestles a bit or he sits and plays with them....it's very endearing to watch. At the drop of a hat the kids will go scrambling to hide and love it when Grandpa can't seem to find them...LOL!

A fav thing for them is us getting into the car and going thru the Drive-Thru for coffees for us and Iced Tea and doughnuts for them. Then we go wait in line at the car wash. We pull in to the car wash and the kids just love the tri-color foam wash and the high pressure wash/rinse....and the grand finale of the commercial blow-dryers. Yes, it's an adventure for the kids and cheap entertainment for us :)
We got home and attacked the inside of the car, pulling dirty mats out tom be washed down, washing the inside of the windows and hubby vacuuming front and back floors. I love leather seats for the ease of cleaning them.

In the meantime the kids played soccer out on the lawn....oh the joy of the mountains of snow melted away.
Anyway, it was fun, but now I savour the quiet evening.

Earth Day Theme and Resources

Earth Day

In the Beginning...In 1963, former Senator Gaylord Nelson began to worry about our planet. (A senator is a person that the people of the United States have chosen to help make the laws.) Senator Nelson knew that our world was getting dirty and that many of our plants and animals were dying.
He wondered why more people weren't trying to solve these problems. He talked to other lawmakers and to the President. They decided that the President would go around the country and tell people about these concerns. He did, but still not enough people were working on the problem.
The IdeaThen, in 1969, Senator Nelson had another idea. He decided to have a special day to teach everyone about the things that needed changing in our environment. He wrote letters to all of the colleges and put a special article in Scholastic Magazine to tell them about the special day he had planned. (Most of the schools got this magazine and he knew that kids would help him.)
The HolidayOn April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. People all over the country made promises to help the environment. Everyone got involved and since then, Earth Day has spread all over the planet. People all over the world know that there are problems we need to work on and this is our special day to look at the planet and see what needs changing. Isn't it great?

One person had an idea and kept working until everyone began working together to solve it. See what happens when people care about our world?

Earth Day, Week, and Month of April

Celebrating Earth Day on April 22 With Students

Alan Hoffmann and Katherine Leathem 1991 Woodrow Wilson Biology Institute

Earth Day affords science teachers with an outstanding opportunity to focus student's attention on the environment and to stimulate their creativity and imagination, so that they can act persuasively to help solve environmental problems. Our belief is that all schools should make this day a tradition which students and faculty eagerly anticipate. The organization of activities for such an event lends itself to an interdisciplinary approach which allows for school-wide participation in the learning process.
Our suggestion is that Earth Day evolve into a week of activities that tend to be student- action oriented. Ideally, these activities will provide them with a means to act on their convictions. Most importantly these activities can provide a progressive model which can make Earth Day activities part of the schedule all year long. It is our charge to keep fresh in the minds of our students the motto that "Earth Day is every day".
Go to

Warm Sunshine

Spring has arrived in Northern British Columbia. It's gloriously sunny and warm and promises to be that way for the upcoming weekend. We have our grandchildren over tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Sunday and Monday before/after school and we plan on doing some yard clean-up while they kick around a ball or ride their bikes.
Dad & Mom came for tea this afternoon. Mom had just come from a Doctor's appointment, where he had to fill in a form, stating that Mom is still able to keep her Driver's license. Mom is an insulin dependant Diabetic, so she needs to have Doctor's sonsent to continue driving. Being an insulin dependant Diabetic myself I can appreciate the reasoning behind this, although I can't imagine having to give up my license. I would feel more than grounded!!
Yesterday I went through my closet and pulled out all our summer clothes packed away for the winter and washed and put away witer clothing. I was brutal in getting rid of worn clothing as well as the ones that don't fit properly anymore. I was ruthless....and discovered that Hubby for sure has a very small wardrobe left and I'm not that far behind....ugh!! Of course going shopping is a dream, but right now we weren't wanting to spend money on clothes....but one does need them...lol
Enjoy this season of new growth and shedding heavy clothes and wiggling our toes in sandals :)

Second Chance

As we celebrate this special weekend, set aside every year to remember the Death and Resurrection of our Christ, remember that God is a God of Second Chance.

National Poetry Month and Week-April

April is National Poetry Month!

The initiative was established by the Academy of American Poets in 1996 as a month-long, national celebration of poetry. It is a time to celebrate poets and their craft. Various events are held throughout the month by the Academy of American Poets and other poetry organizations. It is a great time to explore the world of words with your kids! Introduce your students to a variety of poetic forms. Assign one or two students each day as “poet of the day” for the month of April. Then provide students with several models for creating different forms of poetry. Have each student select one form of poetry and write an original poem and illustrate. Assign a day and have students read their poetry out loud to the class.

"National Poetry Month (NPM) brings together publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools, and poets around the country to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture." Visit the
Academy of American Poets for more information. Scholastic features wonderful resources and activities here. Education Oasis's article, "Painlessly Bringing Poetry into Your Classroom includes a list of activities. Interested in combining technology and poetry? Check out "Creating Poetry Videos."

Good Friday

"He (Pilot) ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to crucify him"

"This is how much God loved the world: He gave us His Son, His one and only Son.
And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; but believing in Him, anyone a full and lasting life.
God did not go to all the trouble of sending His Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts Him is aquitted; anyone who refuses Him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person's failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to Him."
John 3:16-18~The Message

*Laws of Parenthood*

There is the Law of Gravity - And then, there is the Law of Parenthood

A child's behavior will improve in proportion to the distance she is away from the parent.

Two is equal to two, except when referring to time. Two minutes of tantrum lasts 20 times as long as two minutes of quiet time.

The choice of a preschooler's best friend corresponds directly to the distance the friend lives from your house.

A child's enjoyment of a popular entertainment will be inversely proportionate to the parent's enjoyment.

The chance of a surprise visit by your parents-in-law is directly proportional to the size of the mess in your home.

A child will always eat exactly what she has loved for the past year unless it is the only food in the fridge.

The ease with which a toddler acquires the ability to say a word increases with its likelihood to embarrass a sailor.
