On the Threshold of GREEN...

Even though we're supposed to get two more weeks of winter (hey, didn't the groundhog say so??) I'm starting to very cautiously, very carefully and oh so slowly, allow myself to look forward to spring. On the threshold of March, with great Milestone dates,like St. Patrick's Day(which is green, green, green),the time change and the arrival of SPRING(!!!)I'm about ready to scrape back the snow off my flower pots and will those tulips to grow already!!
Hey, don't laugh, I've already pulled out a lilac-scented candle and have it burning *taking deep breathes*

TGIF....

Another Chiro appointment this morning. This time Hubby had one as well, so we went in together. Afterwards Hubby took me out for a Starbuck's Latte....Mmmmmm! Since our only Starbucks is located in Safeway store we combined the coffee time with picking up groceries. What a huge help it is to have Hubby come along and help...not only does he lug heavy bags, but things just go so much faster when I'm not doing it all on my own. Usually Hubby heads for the magazine aisle right away or just opts to stay home, but today he was so helpful. Before heading for home, I wanted to pop into Walmart to make an appointment to get our passport pics taken. There stood 3 employees, all doing nothing. So, they could take us in right away, develop them right away and we're happy. One more thing crossed off the"To Do" list.
We got home for lunch and then Dad & Mom came for tea. Mom brought warm muffins, straight from the oven...Mmmmm!

Speaking of Dishwashers....

I have been complaining about the status of "clean" after my dishes have processed thru the dishwasher. Some have told me it's these new dang dishwashers that use less water, leaving the dishes with unrinsed residue on them. I have tried everything I can think of...different rinse agents, different dishwasher detergents, the arrangement of the dishes in the machine and going online to read up in the trouble-shooting section...well, yesterday I was totally fuming!! I mean, what is the point of a dishwasher if you constantly feel crusties on dishes, or you can see leftover gunk stuck onto the now hot, baked dishes?? So, I got Hubby to pull out the manual and see if maybe we have a filter or something plugged up. What a useless manual, which led to no obvious answers. So, once again we're running an empty dishwasher, first with detergent and then a rinse cycle to thoroughly clean the inside of the dishwasher and then we'll try all over again to see if we can get the thing to clean properly. So much for saving time and energy!! What is the point of a dishwasher if I have to scrape residue off of "clean" dishes OR have to pre-rinse dishes when loading them into the thing...urg!!
If anyone else is finding this a challenge and have maybe solved the problem, let me know :)

16 Random Things About Fibromyalgia and My Life with it:

1. Fibromyalgia means pain in the fibrous tissues of the body, such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
2. Primary fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a form of fibromyalgia where pain occurs in muscles, tendons, and ligaments throughout the body. The cause is not known.
3. I was first diagnosed with Fibromyalgia 2 years after my 2nd son had been a pedestrian hit by a car. He had three years of Rehab and although he had a team of specialists working with him, he lived at home and most of the burden of this fell on me.My Internist, whom I saw for Diabetes, finally heard my complaints of over-all pain and diagnosed Fibromyalgia.
4. After the initial diagnosis, I was sent to a Neurologist, who confirmed the diagnosis and got me started on medication to help me cope with the pain.
5. The main symptoms of fibromyalgia are pain, tenderness to touch, and stiffness in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The neck, shoulders, abdomen, lower back, and thighs are the parts most likely to be affected. The pain may be spread out evenly over a large area, but there are also "tender points," where the pain is more severe.
6. The doctor will check for up to 18 "tender points," areas where the pain is more severe. I tested positive in all 18 points.
7. I continued to work through out the three years following my son's accident as well as for five years beyond that. I worked at a Spa but the pain became so intolerable that I took a disability leave and have not returned.
8. Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include difficulty sleeping and lack of energy. People with fibromyalgia can also suffer from changes in mood, anxiety, headaches, and irritable bowel syndrome.
9. Since there is no definitive medical test for fibromyalgia, the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is made by doing a physical exam and a thorough history. Outside of Doctor's reports, it is a battle to get disability for Fibromyalgia, however it is now recognized as a disability.
10. Signs and symptoms of fibromyalgia can vary, depending on the weather, stress, physical activity or even the time of day.
11. Why does it hurt? Researchers believe repeated nerve stimulation causes the brains of people with fibromyalgia to change. This change involves an abnormal increase in levels of certain chemicals in the brain that signal pain (neurotransmitters). In addition, the brain's pain receptors seem to develop a sort of memory of the pain and become more sensitive, meaning they can overreact to pain signals.
12. Fibromyalgia is an often-misunderstood chronic condition, which can be very frustrating.
13. I have often wished there was a physical display of Fibro...sort of like a wheelchair or cane, just so people would recognize Fibro as a disability...I know we've thought the same thing about my son's brain injury. I wonder what people would say if we wore t-shirts with that caption on it :P
14. Get enough sleep - Because fatigue is one of the main characteristics of fibromyalgia, getting sufficient sleep is essential. I take a low dose of an Antidepressant to help me go into the deep REM stage of sleep.
15. Now here's another great bit of advise - Reduce Stress. Develop a plan to avoid or limit overexertion and emotional stress. Allow yourself time each day to relax. Now I chuckle at this, since stress has been high in the past several years, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't make the effort to reduce stress.
16. Finally...alternatively, Chiropractic care, Accupuncture and Massage Therapy,can help relieve pain.

And the Oscar goes to...

I'm just catching up on here from neglecting to post for a couple of days. I watched the Oscar on Sunday night, with millions of others around the world. Hugh Jackman gave a rousing start, with a healthy dose of old-fashioned Hollywood razzle-dazzle. I love it that this year the Oscars had "more show than biz", according to Hugh in his interview with Barbra From. Not only was Hugh a entertaining Host, but he showed he has more talent besides Hosting and acting...song and dance.
Then there was the Red Carpet, showing off all the glamour of the Stars. Some of my favourites are:
I appreciated how simply elegant both Brad and Angelina were dressed.
Kate Winslet was a stunning as usual.
Anne Hathaway was shining in her strapless gown.
Beyonce made a dramatic figue in black and bronze gown.
Amy Adams looked like a song, with a gorgeous collar of jewels around her neck.
Amanda Seyfried looked cute in a gown cinched with a big bow.
Miley Cyrus looked as pretty as a princess.
I haven't seen all the movies nominated and don't think I'd even rent all the movies nominated, but it's fun to see all the glitz and glam :)

Could this be Your Parent?

For those of us with aging parents, if you haven't gone through the excruciating experience of both of them losing their Driver's License, sooner or later you will. That's what makes this so funny :)

A senior citizen said to his eighty-year old buddy:
'So I hear you're getting married?'
'Yep!'
'Do I know her?'
'Nope!'
'This woman, is she good looking?'
'Not really.'
'Is she a good cook?'
'Naw, she can't cook too well.'

'Does she have lots of money?'
'Nope! Poor as a church mouse.'
'Why in the world do you want to marry her then?'

'Because she can still drive!'

Random thoughts and facts about type 2 diabetes and chronic disease.

Twenty-Five Random Things About Type 2 Diabetes and My Life with It:

1. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes after major surgery when I was 32 years-old.
2. Learning that I had gestational diabetes with my second son was one of the scariest days of my life.
3.Most people with type 2 diabetes are still able to produce insulin at diagnosis. However, the insulin they produce is unable to perform its primary job, which is helping the body's cells use glucose for energy. Usually this is due to a problem with the body’s insulin receptors, the location on cells where insulin binds so that glucose can enter. This condition is called insulin resistance.
4. Having type 2 diabetes has boosted my personal science IQ.
5. Most people with type 2 diabetes do require oral medications or insulin injections, of which, I require both.
6. I have a high predisposition towards Diabetes because 3 out of 4 grandparents had it and both of my parents have it.
7. When it comes to diabetes treatments, doctors don’t always have all the answers. Neither do nutritionists.
8. I am lucky to have some amazing doctors and nutritionists and Diabetic Nurses, but have had to be pro-active in finding them.
9. When people with diabetes are sick with a cold, flu, or other infection, it can cause blood glucose levels to climb. As well, people who have diabetes are vulnerable to nerve and vascular damage that can result in loss of protective sensation in the feet, poor circulation, and poor healing of foot ulcers.I have experienced this in a big way.
10. Managing a chronic disease can be extremely frustrating. There are the days when I know I have been “good” and yet my blood glucose readings refuse to acknowledge my sacrifice. Conversely, there are “bad” days when everything on the meter is just hunky-dory. Go figure. I can’t.
11.People with diabetes have won Olympic medals, held political office, climbed mountains, and made history. My goals are not quite that ambitious, however I do wish to live a long life :)
12. The older I get, the more inspired I am by people who remain doggedly optimistic about having a chronic condition.
13. I really, really miss eating sweets. Healthy eating with diabetes is not a life sentence to some rigid, deprivation-oriented menu plan -- the concept of a "diabetes diet" is mostly myth.
14. Every single day I work hard to make peace with my body.
15. Weight-loss is an ongoing battle for me and when I hear BMI my blood curdles!!
16. My fingers tingle when my sugar drops.
17. I still forget to carry glucose tabs and candy with me – not smart.
18. I'm grateful that Canada now pays for kid's medication and Diabetes supplies, including an insulin pump, but I wish they would lower the cost for adult Diabetics as well.
19. I worry that my kids might inherit a tendency towards depression and type 2 diabetes. Or my grandkids.
20. The obesity epidemic among kids in this country worries me.
21. If I could have one wish come true, it would be that kids would not have to suffer with this disease.
22. I’d love to give everyone in this country a free membership to a gym.
23. Diabetes remains a kind of mystery disease to most people based on the advice they give me on what to eat, when to eat, etc.
24. No two people with type 2 diabetes are the same. My diet is not your diet (another huge frustration at times).
25. I have type 2 diabetes, but it is not who I am.

I'll be there with Bells on my Socks...

No, I'm not stuck in Christmas mode! Although, I'm not really too sure what this all means, except I got an Invitation to attend a Girls-Night-Out at our church and am supposed to bring an Appy and a wrapped new pair of socks....huh??!! I suspect we'll be doing an exchange of socks, but have no clue what I'm in for....I guess I'll just go and then I can tell you all about it tomorrow :)

Chuckle for Today

An elderly gentleman...
Had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%
The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, 'Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.'
The gentleman replied, 'Oh, I haven't told my family yet.
I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two elderly gentlemen from a retirement center were sitting on a bench under a tree when one turns to the other and says: 'Slim, I'm 83 years old now and I'm just full of aches and pains. I know you're about my age. How do you feel?'
Slim says, 'I feel just like a newborn baby.'
'Really!? Like a newborn baby!?'
'Yep. No hair, no teeth, and I think I just wet my pants.'
Laugh of the Day :)
*Ol' Spot*
A group of country neighbors wanted to get together on a regular basis and socialize. As a result, about 10 couples formed a dinner club and agreed to meet for dinner at a different neighbors' house each month.
When it came time for Jimmy and Susie Brown to have the dinner at their house, like many women, Susie wanted to outdo all the others and prepare a meal that was the best that any of them had ever lapped a lip over.
A few days before the big event, Susie got out her cookbook and decided to have mushroom smothered steak. When she went to the store to buy some mushrooms, she found the price for a small can was more than she wanted to pay. She then told her husband, "We aren't going to have mushrooms, because they are too expensive."
He said, "Why don't you go down in the pasture and pick some of those mushrooms? There are plenty of them right in the creek bed."
She said, "No, I don't want to do that, because I have heard that wild mushrooms are poison."
He then said, "I don't think so. I see the varmints eating them all the time and it never has affected them."
After thinking about this, Susie decided to give this a try and got in the pickup and went down in the pasture and picked some.
She brought the wild mushrooms back home and washed them, sliced and diced them to get them ready to go over her smothered steak. Then she went out on the back porch and got Ol' Spot's (the yard dog) bowl and gave him a double handful. She even put some bacon grease on them to make them tasty.
Ol' Spot didn't slow down until he had eaten every bite. All morning long, Susie watched him and the wild mushrooms didn't seem to affect him, so she decided to use them.
The meal was a great success, and Susie even hired a lady from town to come out and help her serve. She had on a white apron and a little cap on her head. It was first class.
After everyone had finished, they all began to kick back and relax and socialize. The men were visiting and the women started to gossip a bit.
About this time, the lady from town came in from the kitchen and whispered in Susie's ear. She said, "Mrs. Brown, Spot just died."
With this news, Susie went into hysterics. After she finally calmed down, she called the doctor and told him what had happened.
The doctor said, "It's bad, but I think we can take care of it. I will call for an ambulance and I will be there as quick as I can get there. We will pump out everyone's stomach and everything will be fine. Just keep them all there and keep them calm."
It wasn't long until they could hear the wail of the siren as the ambulance was coming down the road.
When they got there, the EMTs got out with their suitcases and a stomach pump and the doctor arrived shortly thereafter. One by one, they took each person into the master bedroom and pumped out their stomach.
After the last one was finished, the doctor came out and said, "I think everything will be fine now, and he left."
They were all looking pretty peaked sitting around the living room, and about this time, the town lady came in and said, "You know, that fellow that ran over Ol' Spot never even stopped."
Red Shirt
Red Shirt
If the red shirt thing is new to you, read below how it went for a man...
Last week, while traveling to Toronto on business, I noticed an army sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together.
After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class ( across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.
'No', he responded.
'Heading out', I asked?
'No. I'm escorting a soldier home.'
'Going to pick him up?'
'No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Afganistan, I'm taking him home to his family.'
The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days.
I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, 'Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do.'
Upon landing in Toronto, the pilot stopped short of the gate, and made the following announcement over the intercom.
'Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the Canadian Armed Forces join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family.
I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign.'
Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be a Canadian.
So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do.
Red Fridays.
Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday.
The reason? Canadians who support our troop s used to be called the 'silent majority.' We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing.
Many Canadians, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of Canadians supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that every red-blooded Canadian who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red.
By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make Canada on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming Hockey game in the bleachers.
If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family, it will not be long before Canada is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once 'silent' majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.
The first thing a soldier says when asked 'What can we do to make things better for you?' is 'We need your support and your prayers.' Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday.
George Washington's Feb. 22nd Birthday
George Washington is called the Father of our Country.
George Washington: Farmer, Soldier, and First President of the United States.
George Washington: First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of His Countrymen...
Until 1971, both February 12 and February 22 were observed as federal public holidays to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and George Washington (February 22). In 1971, President Richard Nixon proclaimed one single federal public holiday, the Presidents' Day, to be observed on the 3rd Monday of February, honoring all past presidents of the United States of America.
George Washington was our first U. S. President. He was born February 22, 1732 in Pope’s Creek, Westmoreland County, Virginia. His term as president ran from April 30th, 1789 to March 3rd, 1797. Washington died December 14th, 1799. The early colonists used to celebrate the birthday of the English King, so that was why they decided to honor George Washington. Parades and balls marked the first celebration held in Richmond, Virginia, a year after Washington's death.
Special events in honor of George Washington's 277th birthday will take place from February 14 through February 16, 2009. Learn about the life of this president, his monument, and tributes to him through stories, song, and poems. Students also can learn the attributes of a quarter. This is also a good time to teach about the first U.S. flag and the American colonies. Find ideas for crafts, games, resources, and other activities by checking on some of these links.
Dental Health Month
National Children's Dental Health Month Creating Oral Health Awareness
National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM) turns 60 this year. Each February, since 1949, the American Dental Association (ADA) has sponsored National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. NCDHM messages and materials have reached millions of people in communities across the country. To get materials, go to their site at
http://www.ada.org/prof/events/featured/ncdhm.asp .
Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Remember to take care of your teeth including following a good diet, cleaning your teeth after eating, and having regular dental checkups. The more children understand about their oral health, the more likely they will be to adopt habits to help them keep those teeth long after they've graduated high school.
February has been designated by the ADA as the month to promote awareness of career opportunities in dentistry and the allied careers.
Crafty Day
I'm feeling like I need to do something crafty today. I didn't want to start a new oil painting, since that's a 2 day commitment, but I did land up painting a couple of canvases with acrylic paint so I can scrapbook them. I wanted to make a canvas for my son to hang in his bedroom, of his son. We just got back from me printing out these really cute pics :)
We were in White Rock, which is just across the Canadian Border from Blaine, Washington. There are train tracks that run between the street side and the boardwalk, along the Pacific Ocean.
