Top 10 Tips for Incorporating Valentine's Day Themes in Your Classroom

Top 10 Tips for Incorporating Valentine's Day Themes in Your Classroom

When many people think of Valentine's Day, they picture chocolate hearts, roses, and gushy cards. However, there are other ways that you can incorporate this romantic holiday into your classroom. Here are some fun and creative ways to add learning to the love.

1. Get some hearty exercise.
Your heart is one of the most important muscles in your body, supplying all the other parts with the oxygen and nutrients that they need to thrive. You can incorporate this into your Valentine's Day lesson plans with cardiovascular activities, learning to take heart rates, or discussing the effects of fatty foods or drugs on the heart.

2. Make a heart.
Valentines have been a long-standing tradition of Valentine's Day, so here is a good chance to bring out the creative skills. Beyond the classic cutting, pasting, and applying glitter, you can have students work on their writing skills, penmanship, or spelling. Consider having them make cards for members of the staff, such as janitors or the food service workers.

3. Start a conversation.
Conversation hearts have been around since the civil war, and each year, new sayings are added. Challenge your students to create their own custom sayings that would fit on the average conversation heart (five or less characters in one line, or two lines of less than four characters). Or, have students pull out half a dozen candy hearts and work them into a story line.

4. Graph it out.
Younger students will enjoy learning to count and graph with the assistance of conversation hearts. Give each student a single serving box and have them graph the contents (how many pink ones, how many yellow ones, etc.) You can even compare as a class to see which color was the most popular.

5. Heart healthy menus.
Since Valentine's Day is all about heart, how about the health of your heart? Encourage students to come up with ways that they can eat better to make their heart healthier (such as skipping fast food for the month of February), come up with balanced meal plans, or even cook some heart healthy recipes.
6. How the heart works.
Your study of Valentine's Day and the heart can also look into heart health and diseases. Talk about the different chambers of the heart, listen to each other's heartbeats with stethoscopes, or discuss heart diagnostic equipment like EKGs.

7. Share heart quotes.
Love has been an often quoted subject throughout literature. Have students match the quote to the original source, or look up their own quotes that convey their feelings.

8. It is all in the blood.
A study of the heart can also take a look at the entire circulatory system. Talk about the heart, lungs, and different blood vessels and their jobs. Older students can discuss the different blood types and how different cells in the blood have different jobs.

9. The heart has a rhythm.
Students are usually familiar with the rhythmic sounds that the heart makes as it is beating. You can use this as an introduction to rhythm in music classes, and have students clap out other rhythms in song.

10. The heart is in the mail.
For some students, the holidays may be the only chance they get each year to see relatives that live out of state. This can be a great way to introduce map reading skills, discuss different climates, or learn to read airline schedules. Older classes can use the internet to plan imaginary trips to far off countries and discuss flight plans and what to pack for the weather.
Since not every person that you send a Valentine to lives in the same home, this can be a good opportunity to discuss how the mail system works. You can also look into the history of mail, like the Pony Express, or discuss how stamps are made. Since the post office often puts out holiday stamps, you can have students design their own stamps for Valentine's Day.
Sharing the love and the science behind Valentine's Day is easy to do with these activities.

Fireproof....

Yesterday was a good day. I had my parents over for "breakfast", since they had to come into town(living a 1/2 hour up the Alaska Highway from Fort St. John)and had to go into the Lab for a fasting blood test. They came for toast and coffee and we had a lovely visit. I'm treasuring each visit with my parents because life is too short not to. Then as they left to go shopping, we left to go meet our 2nd oldest son, Colin, at Tim Hortons. Again it was a great visit. Hubby left for home and I went shopping with Colin for clothing and shoes for his son, who is still living with his mom in the Lower Mainland. I LOVE shopping for my grandkids!!
He dropped me off at home after we mailed the parcel and Hubby went along with him to go buy work related stuff. They came back with the movie Fireproof for us to watch. I had stuck a chicken lasagna in the oven, had fresh crispy crust bread and a large salad ready, so we could eat supper while watching the movie.
Soooo, all that is leading up to my review on the Movie.

Fireproof is
An action-packed love story, FIREPROOF will have audiences laughing, crying, and inching toward the edge of their seats as they are drawn into the world of a firefighter, his wife ... and a marriage worth rescuing.

Cast and crew understand they are ambassadors for the film's message of hope."We don't do this so that people will pat us on the back. We do it for God's glory." ~ says Sherwood Senior Pastor Michael Catt.

I highly recommend this movie to all! I leave you with this song....it says it all!

National Get Organized Month

Whew....I just finished organizing files!! I literally shredded 5 blue recycle bags full and that has taken me all week. I cannot believe I kept old utility bills and such since 1998...yikes!! So, along with getting most utility bills as e-bills now I will only be saving Tax Returns and what is pertinent for them.
I also am just about finished organizing my craft room....I'm absolutely pooped, but feeling very satisfied with my accomplishments. I get a crazy high when I'm organizing or planning something...I know...am I anal??!!
BUT, I found I'm not alone. While browsing thru Blogs, I discovered there is actually a National Association of Professional Organizers...huh :)

You Make Me Laugh

I get a Daily Newsletter for Cross Walk, which includes You Make Me Laugh. I thought this one was so cute that I had to share :)

Emergency Flowers*

I stopped at a florist shop after work to pick up roses for my wife. As the clerk was putting the finishing touches on the bouquet, a young man burst through the door, breathlessly requesting a dozen red roses.

"I'm sorry," the clerk said. "This man just ordered our last bunch." The desperate customer turned to me and begged, "May I please have those roses?"

"What happened?" I asked. "Did you forget your wedding anniversary?"

"It's even worse than that," he confided. "I crashed my wife's hard drive!"

Great Classroom Icebreakers

10 Great Classroom Icebreakers

1. Self-Portrait.

Have your students draw themselves. After they have done this, collect the papers and hang them up for the whole class to see. Now have students try to guess who the artists was for each picture.

2. Letter Writing.

At the beginning of the year, write a short letter about yourself as the teacher. Tell the students where you live, what your hobbies are, and if you have any children, pets, etc. Hand out your letter to each student in your class and ask them to write you back with similar information about themselves.

3. The Mingle Game.

Give each student an index card. Have them write a question that they would like to ask the other students in the class. Examples might include, "What is your favorite song?" or "What is your favorite sport?" Next, have the students get up and walk around the room. When you say, "stop," students have to stand beside the person closest to them and ask the question that is on their own card. Both students have to answer the questions. Now have them mingle again and meet a new person.

4. The "What Am I?" Game.

Have the students get into a circle. Give each student a post-it note. Have each person write a noun on the post-it note. Then stick the post-it on the forehead of the person standing to right of them with the noun showing. Now have student take a turn to ask the group a "yes/no" question that will help them guess the noun on their forehead. If they do not guess correctly, the person on their right gets to ask a question. Keep going until all of the noun have been guessed, or your time limit has expired.

5. These are a few of my favorite things.

Pass around a sheet of paper and some pens. Ask the students to write their name and their favorite TV shows (you can come up with your own topic for favorite things). Collect the papers and pens. Begin reading the answers, but have the class guess who wrote the response.

6. Birthday Lineup.

Call out any month of the year and have all students born in that month come up to the front of the room. It is up to the students to decide who stands first, second, etc., so they are standing from the first day of the month to the last day of the month. Now call out another month (don't call the months in order), and have those students try to position themselves correctly by day and by where they should stand as an entire month. This is a great way to get kids working together and knowing each other. Once all of the kids have lined up, test them to see if they are correct.

7. Icebreaker Pictionary.

Have the students draw pictures about what they like to do, what their favorite foods are, and what is their favorite subject in school. Have each student come up and show their pictures to the class. See if the students can guess what each student drew that tells a little bit about themselves. For instance, if a student draws a yellow M, can anyone guess that she likes McDonalds?

8. Show and Tell.

Don't forget about this old time favorite part of class. Instruct students to bring in something that they cherish, or just want to share with the class. Give each student a turn to come up and tell about the item that they brought in. This way the class will get to know each other and something that makes each student happy.

9. The Snowball Activity.

Have students write three things about themselves on a piece of paper. Then have them crumble up the paper to resemble a snowball. Let the students have a snowball fight for about one minute. Now everyone grabs one of the snowballs and has to try and find the person who wrote on it. Once they find their partner, they have to bring that person up in front of the class and explain what they learned about their new friend with the three facts written on the piece of paper.

10. The Observation Game.

Line up the students in two lines facing each other. If there is an odd number of students, you can play the game, too. Give students 30 seconds to look each other over really good, paying attention to all details about their partner. The students in one line now turn facing the other way while the other line of students changes something about themselves. For example, a girl might take off a hair bow, or a boy might un-tuck his shirt. When the kids in the first line turn back around, they have to guess what their partner changed. Now switch and let the first line make the change and the second line guess the difference.

Happy Birthday Mom!

Mom is celebrating a Birthday today....she is now 75 years old. I admire my Mom for so many things...she birthed 10 children(that alone makes her super Mom to me), Mom has always been so incredibly happy for each of her kids when something great has come into their lives, Mom prays for each of us, Mom has been Patience personified with my Dad, who has Alzheimer's,nothing tickles Mom more than having all her family surround her on as many occasions a year as possible, Mom loves to sing...I remember many Sunday mornings hearing both parents sing together while getting ready for church....Mom is so much more to me than just "Mom"...she is also a Friend.
Mom, my wish for you is this coming year be one where the blessings outshine the hardships....I Love You!

It's Tough Being a Woman....

One thing I love to find are new Blogs. This afternoon I came across In His Grip, where Judy promotes this study tool.

Author Beth Moore says in her Study Book "Esther: It's Tough Being a Woman" ".....no life is free of troubles, regardless of religion race, or nation........When we trust our lives to the hand and pen of an unseen but ever-present God, He will write our lives into His story and every last one of them will turn out to be a great read. With a grand ending. And not just in spite of those catastrophes. Often because of them."

The past few years have been so very tough for me and the one thing I can say for certain is that I DO NOT have control over my life and, like Beth, I am glad I can trust my life to God. I also glean enormous strength from the example of great Woman in History.

I am an avid reader and plan to order, study and add this study book to my library.

A Rosey Thought

What Color Rose Should You Give for Valentine’s Day?

Article by: Denise

Wondering what color rose to give to the special people in your life? Whether you’re showering someone with a bouquet for Valentine’s Day or “just because,” this guide will show you what each color rose symbolizes.

Red

Arguably the most popular rose color, red symbolizes love, passion, and desire — no wonder red roses are so popular for Valentine’s Day! There are tons of variations on the red rose, and the one you choose should be one that most accurately represents your feelings for that person.
Yellow

Yellow roses are a popular symbol of friendship. They can also represent love between family and friends and happiness. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you can use yellow roses to express sympathy to someone in need of a little care. Along with yellow roses, other roses in this color spectrum (orange and peach) symbolize pride, or appreciation and desire, respectively.

White

There’s a reason white is the prime color for weddings. White roses symbolize purity, unity, and deep affection. When combined with red roses, you form a powerful bouquet of undying love and sentiment for your special someone. For a nice alternative to red roses on Valentine’s Day, consider giving a bouquet of white roses or a combination of both.

Pink

While similar in theme to red roses, pink roses are a lighter symbol of love and affection. Pink roses are perfect for a couple’s first Valentine’s Day together or as a lighthearted gesture of romance and playfulness. Combine pink and light red roses for a truly meaningful sentiment.

Learning the true symbolism behind each color rose allows you to pick the perfect bouquet for that special someone in your life and convey your emotions in a thoughtful, beautiful way. When one emotion isn’t enough, you can combine different colors to create a lasting impression on the people who are important to you in your life!

One Flaw in Women

Last fall when I went to the Women's Wellness Day, this poem was in the goodie bag handed out at the door. I just came across it again and love the message it brings.

Women in History - 1935

One Flaw in Women

Women have strengths that amaze men.
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy
and laughwhen they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
They stand up to injustice. They don't take "no" for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally. They cry when their children excel
and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about
a birth or a wedding.
Their heart breaks when a friend dies.
They grieve at a loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they
think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug or a kiss
can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you.
The heart of a woman
is what keeps the world keep turning.
They bring joy, hope and love.
They have the compassion and ideas.
They give moral support to their
family and friends.
Women have vital things to say
and everything to give.
HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,
IT IS THAT

THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

Do the Next Thing

I found this over at Rocks In My Dryer

From an old English parsonage down by the sea
There came in the twilight a message to me;
Its quaint Saxon legend, deeply engraven,
Hath, it seems to me, teaching from Heaven.
And on through the doors the quiet words ring
Like a low inspiration: “Do the next thing.”

Many a questioning, many a fear,
Many a doubt, hath its quieting here.
Moment by moment, let down from Heaven,
Time, opportunity, and guidance are given.
Fear not tomorrows, child of the King,
Trust them with Jesus, do the next thing.

Do it immediately, do it with prayer;
Do it reliantly, casting all care;
Do it with reverence, tracing His hand
Who placed it before thee with earnest command.
Stayed on Omnipotence, safe ‘neath His wing,
Leave all results, do the next thing.

Looking for Jesus, ever serener,
Working or suffering, be thy demeanor;
In His dear presence, the rest of His calm,
The light of His countenance be thy psalm,
Strong in His faithfulness, praise and sing.
Then, as He beckons thee, do the next thing.

Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was the most famous leader of the American civil rights movement, a political activist, and a Baptist minister. In 1964, King became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (for his work as a peacemaker, promoting nonviolence and equal treatment for different races). On April 4, 1968, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1977, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Jimmy Carter. In 1986, Martin Luther King Day was established as a United States holiday. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.)

Hidden Treasure

Last evening we found a very precious hidden treasure.Somehow a memory stick got into our camera case and we couldn't figure out where it came from or why it was there, but obviously when seeing this pics, David put it into our camera bag by mistake. On July 16th,2006, just before coming North to work, David and his wife Karen went for a Hot Air Balloon ride. David had booked this long before he planned to come here to work. He died in a car accident September 30th, 2006. Wow....what a priceless find!

Sweet in the Middle of Sour

I was reading thru the various devotions/newsletters I subscribe to and came across this article at Crosswalk.com I find it interesting to read of married couples faced with tough financial times and a depressed Economy, turning towards each other and moving forward as a Unit, rather than escaping the heat and splitting.

"People are rethinking divorces," said Rock. "They realize they can't even afford attorneys," much less the cost of supporting two households.

Some say the sour economy is accomplishing a moral turnaround that ministers couldn't: convincing couples to not walk away when things get tough, but rather to forgive each other and remain committed to their vows, "for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer."

Margaret Bernstein

"I've never seen a case in my 18 years of doing this where there hasn't been a reason to have hope," she said. "Through any kind of crisis, whether it's health or financial, families can grow closer and stronger."

Karin Maloney Stifler, a certified financial planner.

I find it very encouraging to read that in this time of tough Economic sour times, there is hope.

Angels Watchin'Over Me

Warning: The following pictures may contain content not suitable for those who are a bit squeamish about accidents. *ha*

Do you remember me talking about the wonderful steel bumper Hubby had installed on his truck. I promised pics, but I did not anticipate them to turn out like this!

The truck is totaled. I was driving and 16km north of Quesnel, going up hill., the pavement was covered with loose snow, with sheer ice underneath. There was nothing I could do to correct it when the truck started fish-tailing. G was snoozing and by the time he figured out what was happening we were going over the edge into a 150ft. Steep ravine. The truck got hung up on small trees, with the driver's side down against the snowy ground and the passenger side up in the air and against the trees. All the snow, broken glass, etc. Fell down on me, hence all my bruises and soft tissue injuries. We were there for about a 1/2 hour before a couple of government workers stopped to check out the tire tracks. By then George had found my cell phone and gotten thru to 911, after losing the call a few times because of bad reception. One of the guys came down and stayed with us until the ambulance and Search & Rescue and cops arrived. He brought me a blanket because I didn't have my jacket on and was freezing cold, my clothes were soaking wet with melted snow.

The cops and a Medic came down and once they had established George was fine, he climbed out of the truck with their help and made it up the steep incline. Then when we determined I was ok, they coached me to get out of the jammed position, get my feet up on the driver's window and slowly push myself up to the passenger window. With two cops, one on either side, they grabbed my arms and pulled me onto the window's edge. That's when I saw that we were literally hanging in the air in the trees. They slid me down the hood and then we tried to climb up the incline, but my running shoes kept giving out on the snow and with no coat or gloves I was quickly going into uncontrollable shaking. The blanket they wrapped around kept sliding of. That's when Rescue decided to send down a sled thingy and pulled me up and got me onto the stretcher and into a very warm ambulance. G told them I was Diabetic/Fibromyalgia, so the Medic checked out everything (blood sugars/pressure) I got a thorough going over and x-rays at the hospital. By the time we got to the hotel it was 6:00pm and the accident was at noon'ish...I hadn't eaten since breakfast and couldn't in case I needed surgery.

I don't remember anything of the truck flipping. I just know that God is good and we are SO grateful we still have each other.

I won't post pics of the bruising because they are too personal and I'd have to rate this as "Mature" :P
We treasure your prayers while we take a step at a time to get back on track.
